What does a cockroach look like?

The German cockroach ( Blattella germanica ) is a small but very annoying insect. Its body measures 10 to 15 mm, and the females are slightly larger than the males. The cockroaches are light brown in color with two dark stripes on the body. Their long antennae are constantly in motion.

Thanks to the pads and claws on their legs, they can move even on smooth vertical surfaces, as well as on the ceiling. Although they have wings, they do not fly - they can only glide from a height.

How do cockroaches breed?

In favorable conditions, the development of one generation lasts only 6–8 weeks . The female forms a cocoon (ootheca) , which she carries for about 4 weeks – during this time she hides in hard-to-reach places, emerging only to feed. One cocoon can contain about 40 eggs .

A single female can lay up to 8 cocoons in her lifetime – that's hundreds of insects in a short time. Most of the colony is made up of larvae, which quickly mature and continue the reproductive cycle.

Where are cockroaches most common?

Cockroaches love warmth, humidity and food leftovers – that is why they most often inhabit:

  • kitchens and bathrooms,

  • restaurants, bakeries, shops,

  • apartments, especially around the sink, dishwasher, radiator, refrigerator and skirting boards.

They are nocturnal and during the day they hide in dark, hard-to-reach places. If you see them during the day, it is a sign of an advanced infestation.

Why are cockroaches dangerous?

They contaminate food with feces and moults,

  • They carry bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites (e.g. roundworm),

  • They can cause allergies and asthmatic reactions,

  • They are considered vectors of diseases such as typhus, tuberculosis, cholera, and plague.

Home remedies are not enough

Sprays and traps available in stores are not able to eliminate the entire colony – especially the larvae hidden in cracks. Cockroaches reproduce very quickly, and their eggs are resistant to most products available to consumers.
