What does a silverfish look like?

The silverfish ( Lepisma saccharina ), also known as the silverfish , is a small, fast insect up to 11 mm long, covered with silvery scales. It is characterized by three long bristles at the end of its abdomen. Silverfish do not have wings - as did their ancestors millions of years ago.

Where does it occur and how does it live?

It is a cosmopolitan insect, found all over the world, but it feels particularly good near people – in bathrooms, kitchens, warehouses, libraries and basements. Silverfish prefer damp, dark and warm places. They are active mainly at night, then they look for food rich in starch (e.g. food scraps, wallpaper, glue, paper and even fabrics).

Development and life cycle

The female lays about 20 eggs in hidden nooks. After hatching, the young silverfish immediately resemble adults, only they are smaller. They reach sexual maturity after 3 years, and live on average 4 years, sometimes up to 8 years!

Are silverfish dangerous?

They do not carry diseases, bite people, or contaminate food. However, they can damage books, documents, wallpaper, or grout by eating anything that contains starch or glue. For this reason, they are sometimes considered pests, especially when they appear in large numbers.

How to get rid of silverfish?

Home remedies usually don't work because silverfish hide in hard-to-reach places and take a long time to develop. The most effective method is a professional pest control treatment , such as ULV fogging , which allows you to get rid of silverfish effectively and safely.
